Wall piece - first attempt

Updated: Oct 6, 2022

I decided to make some wall pieces, but my first attempt was not successful.

I rolled some thin slabs and created wedge shapes supports to create an undulating effect. It proved to be extremely difficult and time consuming to attach the wedges. The piece did not need tp stand, so I made it in pairs of slabs, to join it at the sides. This worked well until I got to the final joins, when I realised that it was not going to be easy to pick the whole thing up to smooth the final join. I left it wrapped up for a couple of days and when I came back and picked it up I broke it in two along this join. The other joins were ok, and I could have repaired it. Rob thought the piece was too thin to carve a hole to attach the screws. He advised me to reclaim the clay and remake it.

On the plus side, I was pleased with the design, the perspective lines, and the gaps. The shapes were based on my sketches and images of Fountain Street and the surrounding areas. I used the design as the basis for two black and white standing pieces instead.

I am going to try again with a more robust support frame and more dramatic planes and angles.
