The first four pieces I made to this design below, were very stable. So the thing I have been focusing on this month is scaling up the pieces whilst ensuring it is still a form that I can carry,
So I made these next two pieces larger, I also increased the spaces at the bottom. I think the stability of the previous items gave me confidence that I had worked out how to make these, but these two pieces had warping issues.
These items were very large and I struggled to carry them and work on them on the boards, knocking the white piece over and having to redo one of the joins. At stoneware firing the black piece fell over and warped. Not just that, it landed on the white piece. The white piece supported it during firing, and although it stands, there is a degree of warping and a crack in one of the joins. I dont know whether it was affected by the weight of the other piece, or whether this is the join I had to remake.
Looking at it with Cath, the warping occured on the end slabs. On these two pieces, they did not have edges at 90 degrees. So I need to add extra pieces at the end again next time, as I had done on the earlier pieces. The spaces at the bottom were also larger, and this probably had an effect too.
So, I now need to try again, maybe make an L shaped design, and reinforce ALL the pieces including the end pieces with a 90 degree support, and finally keep the cuts in the bases to a minimum.
I am going to try this again for GNCCF.
