I have used the last couple of months, whilst my shoulder recovers, to fill sketchbooks with new drawings and paintings from research trips into the city. There are a few ideas that are showing some promise, both in terms of colour and form, and I am excited to see them realised. I also want to make some pieces of different sizes, as my MA pieces are quite large.
I already have one flat sided sample vessel that I made this year, but did not explore fully, it is based on, and would complement my existing work, so I could develop further pieces quickly. I am deliberating whether to do this, or just forget it and move on to the new sketches.
I dont really like to look backwards. So my dilemma is which idea to follow next.
I think I will try a group of flat sided vessel forms, alongside a second group based on my recent sketches. I also want to remake the panels, based on Marsden Street, but am not yet sure whether to do these as wall pieces, or sculptural forms or vessels
Establishing a Creative Network
One of the benefits of university was access to a range of valued opinions. I now have to just listen to my intuition. I know that the way forward is to make, and see what develops. I am prone to overthinking. I need to make, and then I can evaluate the results.
Working alone at home has made me miss my tutors and fellow students. In the longer term I want to develop a critical, but supportive network, where I can discuss my new work and ideas. I have talked to several of my fellow classmates since we left university, and we have shared images of designs and work in progress. However I would like to establish a broader group to meet in person or online on a quarterly basis going forward. I am going to work out how to do this, and try to put it in place during the second half of 2023.
