Mindmap 2019

Updated: Sep 8, 2021

Update May 2020. Looking back at my original mind map, I am surprised that the ideas I am interested in now, were present in my mind map so early in the course. In the concepts section, there is a section for cities including circles for both architecture and pathways. Connections, choices and opportunities, with movement, and hidden and exposed in the family and secrets sections. I am continuing to work on clarifying and developing these ideas going forward. Aesthetically my taste has not changed a great deal, I still like sculptural work, with a minimalist look. I still like predominately handbuilding techniques.

There are a lot of other ideas there, for example I originally had plants and trees under consideration, but the bulb project has led me away from that. There are other ideas that I like, such as the sea, but I do not feel strongly enough about. The recent research module has helped me identify which areas are more important to me, and let go of those that do not have a personal connection. The list of ceramic artists I like has expanded considerably, as my knowledge has grown.

I am surprised that my making section is not very well developed, just a list of building techniques. I have tried a lot of new processes, equipment and materials this year, and enjoyed using different clays especially. I want to continue to investigate saggar and smoke firing, and work on my throwing. However I continue to enjoy the handbuilding techniques below and will see where they lead me. I enjoyed experimenting with different clays, but I have reached the end of the road with slips. I was very thorough in my testing, but they are probably not for me.

I notice below that the word glazes has a question mark next to it. I have experimented with unglazed clay, and am not satisfied with the results. At the same time, I have read Greg Daly and experimented with glaze making, and have realised that I can easily make and test whatever I need. In fact I have to admit that I have actually enjoyed mixing slips, inks and glazes, so have made something of a u-turn. This is a bit annoying as Dave Binns told me that I would, and I am reluctant to admit it. (Perhaps he wont read as far as this).
