I made these pieces, based on sketches of city streets, chiefly Marsden Street. Rob had previously suggested I use an L shape to add greater stability, he was right. I made these with a right angle at one end, and they remained standing at stoneware.
Unfortunately I was influenced by the design of the first wall piece, and cutting into the two end slabs, caused a new issue. These panels really needed to go down to the base. These pieces were fired to 1260, and the cut ends warped, although the pieces managed to stay standing. I am so annoyed with myself. I am struggling to spend more time at university, and am making bad decisions. They may have survived if I had just kept the end pieces flat. I dont know why I am still making changes at this late stage, and trying new things.
On the positive side I liked the design, the texture, the perspective lines within the pieces, the slips, oxide and glaze combinations were more layered and interesting.
So, I now need to try again, go back to ES40, make an L shaped design, reinforce ALL the pieces including the end pieces with a 90 degree support, and keep the cuts in the bases to a minimum. I will use my plaster texture blocks, sgrafitto and colour layering, as I liked these effects, and hopefully it will work out. Within the pieces I have already made, I have got all the elements, the stability, the shapes, the colours, I just need to get them all in the same piece! I realise that there is not enough time to remake these for my MA show, but there is time to use elements of the slip and glaze layers on my King Street pieces.
