I have made another King Street Form, see below.
I have modified the design slightly to reduce the stress on the joins. I have impressed the clay using a hand carved plaster slab, and there are perspective lines on each facet, revealed in places where the slip has been rubbed back. The layers of lack and white slip, and sgrafitto lines have added to the feeling of clashing architectural styles, density, and planes and angles of the city streets. I have had to leave it to dry and uncovered, over the weekend so that Cath can fire it on Monday. I would normally leave it covered for longer, so am a bit worried by the fast drying schedule.
I made another piece this week on black clay, there are elements from my first wall piece in the design, and colour application. It has been built like a 'block' on the map, a group of buildings surrounded by streets. I have used the same colour scheme as the Marsden Street panels, but made the angles more dramatic.
In terms of the inspiration it is more like the buildings near Brown Street, that are like 'an island', and where traffic goes past on every side. It should make a small group with the Marsden Street panels, so almost like a bridge between the panels and the sculptural forms.
I am not wholly satisfied with this form, as it looks a bit castle-like, maybe it will look better combined with the Marsden Street panels. I think the wider pieces reflect the streets and perspective lines better. I am interested to see how the darker surfaces turn out though, and the textures and sgrafitto.
