Colour inspiration - with help from Mari.

Updated: May 3, 2022

These are a couple of quick sketches from my sketchbook in acrylic showing a palette of blues, greens purples pinks and greys. (Im afraid the tones have not reproduced exactly). I showed them at a session with Rob Parr and my fellow students on Friday morning to indicate what I am thinking about in terms of colour for my porcelain pots. I could not say at the time why I had chosen these pale watery colours, or why it felt right. I couldnt explain why I thought these colours were right for the city, especially as my sketches of actual buildings and architectural features showed a warm palette of reds, yellows creams and greys.

On Friday it took my fellow student Mari just minutes to point out that the palette reminded her of Adolf Valette!

So I paid a visit to Gallery 16 at Manchester Art Gallery today to look at their collection of works by Valette, six of them are below. The first painting below is Bailey Bridge, and the cut down version here does not do justice to the luminous yellow reflections on the water at dusk.. The second and third paintings of cabs at All Saints, are above a long bench and it is possible to get very close to the paintings. Both paintings are covered in a top layer of thin vertical brushstrokes spaced about 2-3mm apart, each stroke is less than a centimeter long. They create a hazy, or foggy, or rainy effect. The paintings have blues, greens, pinks and yellows along with hazy greys and muted creams and taupes.
