Accidents will happen

I completed my largest piece, and decorated it with slip. It came through the bisque firing without any problem. I applied oxides and took it through to the glaze room for a final coat of clear glaze. It was very heavy, and I was struggling to carry it. I lifted it up to the table in the glaze room, which is much higher than a normal table, but one side was not high enough to clear the edge. Half the piece was above the edge, the other half below. As I pushed it forwards towards the bench I hit the edge and broke it in two.

Both halves stood independently on the flat table. Rob counselled against trying to fix them together, and he fired them with kiln bricks on either side. One piece came through ok, but the larger piece fell against the kiln brick and warped during firing.

It was a large form, and the slip and glazes worked ok. It is quite difficult to see the split from a distance, and several people have taken a close look at it before realising that it is broken and propped up against the back of the workbench.
