The likes exercise below gives an early indication of some of the making processes that I like to use, and the aesthetic that I like to see. Whilst my knowledge of studio ceramics has grown considerably since these slides were made, some of the artists still feature in the work I like to see. Evidence of this can be seen in my later assignment D4201, where I discuss aesthetics, making, and themes with established artists. In terms of form I like sculptural rather than functional work, the pieces selected below are largely handbuilt. The textures are on a small scale, not the main feature of the pot, but sometimes showing attention to detail or evidence of the artists hand. The surface colours are muted, with some natural variation in firing, or an expressive application to introduce some element of chance.
Broadly speaking I am not unhappy with my earlier choices. If I were to complete this exercise again in May 2020, I would perhaps include more well known artists, I would perhaps include more glaze applications and colours, as my introduction to making my own glazes has opened up a wide range of options, I had not imagined. A slightly shorter, but current, version of this exercise can be seen on the inspiration page of this site.
